Getting All Students Involved

Chris Phillips

GRADE LEVEL: Junior High/High School (any grade/any level)
SKILLS: Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing
TIME: Any length of time
MATERIALS: Cardboard, scissors and markers

OBJECTIVES:

1. To get students participating in class without having to call them out.

2. To limit the amount of time spent waiting for students to volunteer.

PROCEDURE:

1. Gain access to cardboard somewhere around your school.

2. Measure the cardboard so that each square is equal in size.

3. Figure out what your biggest class of students is. You will want to make enough cards to so that every student will receive one.

4. Write/draw each letter of the alphabet on a separate card as well as numbers from 1-10 (or 1-however many you wish).

5. During class circulate around and allow the students to pull their own card from the pile. This will be their card for the period. Alternatively you can create a box for students to draw from instead.

6. The rest is up to you and your JTE.

NOTES:

  • You and your JTE can decide how you want to use the cards in your class. For instance, if you have a worksheet with numbered questions have the student with card “1” answer question 1.

  • Have the students that draw a letter card use a dictionary to find new vocabulary beginning with their letter. Ask some students to try and explain one or two words to the class.

  • This has been quite helpful at my school as many students do not like to volunteer.
