Feelings

| GRADE LEVEL: | Elementary 1 - 6 |
| SKILLS: | Speaking, Listening |
| TIME: | 1 class (45 minutes) |
| MATERIALS: | Feelings Flashcards+, Feelings Small Cards++, Flyswatters (3) |
| OBJECTIVES: | To introduce new vocabulary |
| | To encourage use of new vocabulary in a fun environment |
PROCEDURE:
1) Greeting (2 min): Hi. How are you? (Ask individual students)
2) Review (10 min): Short review game (e.g. Criss Cross)
3) New Material (10 min): Feelings; happy, mad, sad, hot, tired, hungry, sick, thirsty, cold, shy, sleepy, in love. First use the flashcards and gestures to teach the new vocabulary. Drill with the class. Pay special attention to ‘thirsty’ and ‘in love’. Quiz individuals with flashcards.
4) Game (7 min): Play flyswatter game (3 teams is good). Have a student from each team stand at front with back to the board. Call out a feeling. Students turn and hit the appropriate flashcard. The fastest to hit the correct card (or the one whose flyswatter is on the bottom) gets one point for their team. I usually draw a circle below the flashcard and have them hit that instead to prevent the flashcards getting damaged. Ensure each student gets at least one go and mix up the cards occasionally. In the middle of the game it’s good to review the flashcards on the board because you can be sure they’re paying attention.
5) New Material (8 min) This is for 3 – 6 Nensei. For 1 – 2 see notes.
“Are you ___?” “Yes, I am.” “No, I’m not.”
Drill new vocabulary using flashcards and HRT as example. Write new vocabulary on the board. I write “Yes, I am” and “No, I’m not” in different colors with an X and O next to them so students can find easily. Give HRT small feelings card. Ask “Are you sleepy?” HRT looks at card and answers “No, I’m not” If cards are the same then answer is “Yes, I am”. If they are different the answer is “No, I’m not” Give a student a different card and ask “Are you sleepy”. Using his/her card, prompt a student to answer “No, I’m not” or “Yes, I am”. Do this with several students and be sure to give one of the noisy boys an “in love” card and ask him.
6) Game (7 min): Tell the students “Let’s play a game”. Ask HRT again “Are you ____”. The HRT answers and then you Janken. Whoever wins holds up one finger and says “one point”. Then ask a student who has a card and janken for another point. Stop and explain to students that when they have 5 points they’re finished and line up at the board. Give them 3 minutes. You can go around and listen ensuring they’re asking properly, but I prefer to get in and play with them. Before game starts drill vocabulary once more. Play twice, having them switch feeling cards with classmate after first game. Ensure everyone knows how to say their new feeling before starting each game.
7) Cool Down (1 min): After handing back cards and sitting down, have students stand up. Tell them “stretch” and do a big stretch, twice. Then “breathe” and take a deep breath” and “again”. This seems to lower the genki level a bit for their next class.
8) Farewell: See ya.
NOTES:
For 1-2 Nensei: Use same Lesson Plan as above, but instead of students asking “Are you ~?”, they ask “How are you?” The answer is “I’m ~.” I think this is easier for them as they already have the new feelings to remember.
+, ++ For Flashcards and small game cards I used http://www.mes-english.com/ There are also bingo cards available (all free).
