Emotional Bowling
Sarah Phillips
| GRADE LEVEL: | ES 1-6 |
| SKILLS: | Listening and Speaking |
| TIME: | 30(+) minutes depending on size of the class |
| MATERIALS: | Medium-sized posters containing pictures or drawings of emotions (angry, sad, happy, sick, sleepy, fine, hungry, thirsty), small pictures of the same posters, 2 balls of yarn |
| YEAR: | 2007 |
OBJECTIVES:
1. To understand and reply correctly to the question, “How are you?”
PROCEDURE:
1. Make medium-sized posters containing pictures of faces containing the emotions (angry, sad, happy, sick, sleepy, fine, hungry, thirsty).
2. Make little copies also.
3. After preparing the materials then you are ready to begin the teaching!!!! Make sure you teach the vocabulary (angry, sad, happy, sick, sleepy, fine, hungry, thirsty) and how to properly answer the question, “How are you?”
4. For grades 1-2, I took out teaching hungry and thirsty, but even for grades 3-6 they still had a hard time with pronouncing thirsty (you know the “th” is difficult), but some of them can do it. It is better to introduce the “th” sound as soon as possible.
5. Clear the classroom, so you have adequate room to do this activity. Depending on what grade you teach. Put the medium-sized posters down on the ground in some fashion like bowling pins.
6. Divide the team into 2 groups. Make an imaginary line or draw a line on the floor a good distance from the medium sized posters.
7. Make the two groups line up behind the line just drawn. Give the first person in line a ball of yarn.
8. The whole point of this game is to land the yarn on the medium sized poster, so the kids must roll it and try to aim for the emotion they received.
9. The ALT will stand in front of the student(s) holding the small copies of the emotions and ask the student, “How are you?” Depending on what emotion is being showed they would reply accordingly. Ex. The ALT holds up a card with a happy face and asks, “ How are you?” The student responds, “ I am happy.”
10. After answering correctly, ask the student to try to roll the yarn on the medium-sized poster that matches the small one just asked. In this case, they must try to land the yarn on the happy face poster.
11. If the yarn touches or lands on the poster then that team receives one point. If it doesn’t land or touch it when it has stopped then they receive no point.
12. When the student is done with his/her bowling then they should move to the back of the line. Now it is the next team’s turn.
13. Continue this until class is over or when everyone has had his/her turn.
14. Afterwards, when picking up the medium-sized posters, ask the students to repeat what poster you are picking up, so that they get more practice.
NOTES:
I used a ball of yarn, but the yarn was more like a flat rope shape, so it was still able to roll and could land on the poster. You can use whatever you fancy as long as it can land on the poster.
The students really liked this game because when they think the ball of yarn was going to land on it, it would roll again causing them not to get a point, but when they did get a point it was a big deal.
