Do you know him / her?

Charlotte Shenker

GRADE LEVEL: JHS 1
SKILLS: Speaking
TIME: Twenty five to thirty minutes
MATERIALS: A few A4 sized caricatures of celebrities, worksheets (see attached), enlarged versions of the worksheets (B4 or A3)
OBJECTIVE: To practice personal pronouns

PROCEDURE:

1. Introduce the activity with your JTE by asking each other (while holding up the A4 sized pictures of celebrities), “Do you know him / her / them?”

2. Repeat the demonstration several times with different pictures to make sure the students understand the change in personal pronoun from “Do you know him?” to “Who is he?”(Usually, my JTE will explain this very briefly in Japanese after our demonstration to make sure that the students won’t use the wrong personal pronoun for the rest of the activity.)

3. Using the enlarged worksheet, show the students that they need to walk around the classroom and talk to their friends using the target sentence structures. If they get a positive answer to “Who is he / she?”, they can write down the name of the celebrity under the picture.

4. Once the students have written down all 10 names, they can come up to either you or the JTE to get their sheets stamped and then go and sit down.

5. At the end of the activity, when everyone has finished, check the students’ understanding by repeating step one – but instead of asking your JTE (and vice versa), ask the students as a group.

NOTES:

All of the caricatures were taken from the website: http://star.nigaoes.com/index.htm

My students really loved the pictures, but the first time we used this activity, we made the mistake of handing out the worksheets before explaining how the activity was to be done and the students were all too distracted to listen. Therefore, I think it would probably be best to demonstrate with the large worksheets on the blackboard and then hand them out to the students.

Since there are so many caricatures available on the site, I usually make about 4 different versions to use in one class.
