Describing Food

| MATERIALS: | Food worksheets, pictures of Japanese food, sample food for sweet, salty, spicy, sour, and bitter, blindfolds |
OBJECTIVES:
To review the words: sweet, salty, spicy, sour, and bitter
To describe food in English
To write a paragraph describing a Japanese food
PROCEDURE:
1. Review the 5 tastes in English.
2. Warm-up/Activity 1 - Bring up 1-2 students (Ss) in front of the class, blindfold them and have them taste some food and tell you the taste in English. I use marshmallows (sweet), chips (salty), sour gummies (sour), wasabi on crackers (spicy), and bitter chocolate (bitter). After each taste has been done, write an example food on the board for each taste.
3. Handout the first worksheet and have Ss write a food example beside each taste.
4. Guessing Game – Go over the food pictures with the class to make sure Ss understand each one. Model the vocabulary and the guessing game and have Ss practice the game with a partner.
5. Activity 3 - Have Ss make groups of 4-5 (depending on class #) and hand out example food description.
6. Go over the food description example with the class and explain the questions that they must answer in each group about their specific food.
7. Handout one food picture to each group.
8. Each group must then write a descriptive paragraph about their food picture using the example paragraph as a model. Ss can also use the vocabulary from the Guessing Game.
9. If time permits (or next class), have a student from each group read their description to the class and have the class guess what food they are describing.
NOTES:
The introduction and tasting of food can be done many different ways. If you bring enough food, the whole class may enjoy tasting each type of food. I usually use 2 students for each type of food and always use the most genki/loudest students for spicy (wasabi). I have found that having students taste the food in the order: Salty, Sour, Bitter, Spicy, Sweet has worked the best. Also do not show the students what food they will be tasting until after they tell you the taste.
