Dating Game

| GRADE LEVEL: | SHS any |
| SKILLS: | Speaking, Listening, some Writing |
| TIME: | One class |
| MATERIALS: | Worksheets, pictures |
PREPARATION:
Select 20 male pictures and 20 female pictures from the internet (or at least enough for each student to have one picture each, with an equal amount of male and female pictures – even if that wont be the case with actual class numbers). Choosing famous people is fun, even if your students won’t know them, but make sure you have a wide range of ethnicity, body/face types and hair colour.
Print each picture out at a size that will fit the worksheet in the space marked “picture”, then attach it with a paperclip or bluetac – this way it can be removed easily and reused several times.
PROCEDURE:
1. Give each student a ‘Dating Game’ print out with a random picture attached. You can try and give boys male pictures and girls female pictures but it doesn’t really matter
2. Tell students NOT to show their picture to anyone else!
3. Students make up a profile to fit the character of the person in the picture they have received. Anything is fine and the funnier the better.
4. Fold the print over to the dotted line, or simply detach the picture and ask students to leave it face down on the table.
5. Students try to write a sentence or two about the type of person their character would “like to meet”.
6. Review the questions with students and their meaning, which will later allow them to find a date.
7. Students can now leave their desks and have conversation with their friends trying to find a date. They CANNOT show their picture to anyone yet.
8. When a pair decide to “date” they can stand together and at the end of the class any couples can show their pictures to each other and the rest of the class.
NOTES:
Assuming you have chosen some suitable pictures it should turn out pretty amusingly and also students might find out that looks aren’t always what they are looking for. You might even get some girl/girl or boy/boy matches which is even funnier if students have forgotten to ask what gender someone is at the beginning of the conversation.
