Crocodile Attack

Karen Mulder

GRADE LEVEL: JHS (also SHS)
SKILLS: Speaking and Listening
TIME: Warm Up 10–15 min
MATERIALS: Magnets, Topic cards, Small Crocodile and star cut outs
YEAR: 2007

OBJECTIVES:

1. To focus student's attention to the English lesson they about to start

2. To build student's confidence in speaking aloud in a relaxed atmosphere

3. To provide an opportunity for students to revise previous lesson content

PROCEDURE:

1. Prior to lesson you will need to prepare some topic cards. Cardboard works best. Write a topic clearly on the front of each card (12 cards). Topics can include: sport, food, transport, body parts, greetings, verbs, weather, school subjects, countries etc. On the back of a few cards stick a crocodile or star cut out.

2. Place the cards on the board with categories displayed using the magnets. Explain each category briefly and have students offer examples.

3. Each line of tables becomes a team. The first team stands up and selects a category. Each member of the team must give an English word related to the topic selected. If a student repeats a word they must change it. A time limit of about 3 seconds keeps the game flowing.

4. When each member has successfully answered, the topic card is turned over to reveal how many points the team is awarded. A crocodile means 0 points. A star means 2 points. A blank card means 1 point.

5. Continue playing until all teams have had the opportunity to play or all cards have been used.

EXTENDING THE GAME:

 Change the topic cards to revise grammar points from previous lessons. Eg 'What' – students need to ask a question beginning with 'what'.

 Use topic cards and have students form a sentence using a word related to the topic.

NOTES:

The materials take a little time to prepare initially. Once the cards are made they are easily transported. The last minute warm up will become a thing of the past!
