Cops and Robbers

Henry Lopez

GRADE LEVEL: Elementary School (can work for any level but works well with 3-6)
SKILLS: Listening warm-up or game to reinforce new vocabulary
TIME: ~15 minute lesson
MATERIALS: Kids who like to scream and run fast and a hallway or big room
OBJECTIVES: To enforce listening comprehension of new vocabulary. Can work for any subject, but the only requirement is to have about 12 new words that must be memorized

PROCEDURE:

1. First break the class up into even member teams. Try to break the students up so that there is an even number of girls and guys on each team otherwise one team will dominate.

2. Place the teams about 50 feet from each other and put a small object in the middle of both teams. If the game is played in a big room, it is a good idea to keep both teams against a wall if not behind a line of some sorts.

3. The teachers, both ALT and JTE, should then give each kid, in secret, a vocabulary word. Make sure that each kid remembers his or her vocabulary or else the game will not work.

4. When both teams are ready scream out a vocabulary word. The object of the game is when both team members hear their special vocabulary word they run out and try to grab the object in the middle. They must return the object to their respective side without being tagged by the opposing team.

5. When both teams get the handle of how the game is played then shout out two vocabulary words at the same time.

NOTES:

This game can also include sentences and questions where the answers are reviewed vocabulary. Ex. What color are my pants? When teaching vocabulary dealing with colors.
