Connect 4
Pete Thompson
| GRADE LEVEL: | JHS 1 |
| SKILLS: | Grammar point review |
| TIME: | Thirty minutes |
| MATERIALS: | Worksheets |
| OBJECTIVES: | To practice present tense conjugation |
PROCEDURE:
1. Make a worksheet with a grid in the middle.
2. On the rows, write down a list of names and pronouns (I, John, we, Mark and Yumi). On the columns, write down a list of actions in the perfect tense (play tennis, eat dinner). Every student gets one of these sheets.
3. The game is essentially a cross between Connect 4 and Tic-Tac-Toe / XyOsies. Explain the rules to the students. They play in pairs (only one sheet is used per pair each game), janken to decide who starts. The first player makes a present tense statement by taking a subject and perfect tense activity and conjugating it, says the statement aloud and puts an O in the box corresponding to the row and column they have used. The next player then does the same and puts an X in their box. They take turns until one student gets four in a row. The loser must sign the winner’s sheet then they can erase their grid sheet and use it again with a different student.
4. Once they’re ok with the rules, review the sentences with the students and then set them loose to go and find someone to play against. Let them play for as long as you want and then count the number of signatures they’ve amassed. The student with the most is the winner.
