Cleaning

GRADE LEVEL: | ES or JHS |
SKILLS: | Speaking |
TIME: | 5-10 minutes |
OBJECTIVES:
- To talk to students outside of class
- To get to know students as individuals
EXPLANATION:
I find that simply cleaning with JHS students after school is an awesome way to actually speak to individuals. After the last class ends, I just go into a room and helps move desks, sweep, whatever. I try to rotate classes, different rooms, etc to ensure things are fairer.
I try and make this a stress-free chance for the kids to talk with me, and have been surprised by how much English some of the students use outside of the class environment. As you get friendlier with students however, keep an eye on your six for "errant" brooms/fingers.
Additionally, as my elementary cleaning times land before I have classes, if you have really young students it can help to make first contact beforehand, and help them wind down before you start to teach. Less interruptions from rambunctious kids means more time for fun.
