Classroom Objects
Sarah Tamosetis
| GRADE LEVEL: | Elementary School 1-6 |
| SKILLS: | Listening, Speaking, increasing vocabulary |
| TIME: | 50 minutes |
| MATERIALS: | Multiples of classroom objects (pen, pencil, paper, book, eraser, scissors, etc) |
| OBJECTIVE: | To teach classroom objects |
PROCEDURE:
1. Slowly introduce objects to the class. Show a pencil “pencil”
2. Add more objects, continually returning to the ones taught previously to check comprehension
3. Once it seems that students are comfortable with the new vocabulary, divide them into groups of about 5 or 6, depending on class size
4. Each group has one of every object in front of them. Students then must listen for an object to be called. Have one student yell out the answer after they have grabbed it, or have the whole group say what the object is when they are touching it.
5. It is fun to throw in desk and chair that are not immediately in front of the students as it is a moment of flurry to get to one
6. Following this activity, have the class get into one large group and to bring all of their objects to the centre
7. Explain/Demonstrate “Close your Eyes” and “Open your eyes”
8. Once this concept has been understood, have students close their eyes. While students are not looking, take a few things away from the pile of objects and put them into a cloth bag/non-see-through plastic bag
9. “Open your eyes”. Students then have to guess what is missing
10. Have students take turns being the person to ‘steal’ objects. They are usually pretty good at policing themselves and giving everyone a fair chance at answering what is missing
FOLLOW UP/REVIEW:
Create a snakes and ladders game with pictures of the classroom objects on it to do a check up the next class.
NOTES:
Use less objects for younger grades, more for the older classes
