At the Restaurant

Angela Williams

GRADE LEVEL: ES 4-6
SKILLS: Listening, Speaking, Presenting
TIME: 45 minute lesson
MATERIALS: Flashcards for target vocabulary, Food and Drink Menu with prices
Optional: fake money, aprons, table cloths and other props

OBJECTIVES:

1. To practice conversation in a restaurant and ordering food

PROCEDURE:

1. Teach vocabulary for food and drink using flashcards

2. Hand out menus with price information. Get students to practice adding up the bill. You can write the questions on the board or, if you have time, prepare a short worksheet. This is a good opportunity for them to practice numbers (as well as some basic maths). Teach them how to say the total in the currency of your choice.

E.g., Pizza, milk and cake = £4.50 "Four pounds and fifty pence".

3. Practice dialogue and shopping phrases. You can adapt the phrases to the level of the class. I used the following example:

Waiter: Hello.

Customer: Good morning.

Waiter: What do you want to eat / to drink / for dessert?

Customer: I want pizza please.

Waiter: OK, that's £4.50, please.

Customer: Here you go. (Hands over money)

Waiter: Here you go. (Hands over food)

Customer: Thank you.

4. Split the class into pairs or small groups and get them to practice, using their own choices from the menu.

5. Get pairs to present in front of the class.

NOTES:

 You can make the restaurant role-play as authentic as you wish. It helps to have the student playing the waiter dress up in a costume (hats!) and props for food. Get the students to use gestures and actions, for example have the waiter greet the customer and show them to their table.

 I taught this class with a group of year 5 and 6 students and they used the phrase "What would you like -- ?" instead of "What do you want -- ?" We also practiced self introduction phrases such as "I have ____ for breakfast/lunch/dinner."
